Back where I'm from, I was personally mentored by one of the best surgeons in the Kingdom of Rondon, who was a baron no less. Eventually, I also ended up serving as a combat medic for a war that just recently ended. As a result, I can't say I've had a lot of time exploring much in the way of hobbies, but I'll be glad to explore that kind of thing with people here. It's certainly much calmer by comparison.
Difficult to say as we adjust to life in this resort, but right now I'm just interested in getting to know everyone else here and assuring we all have a pleasant time. I assure you, I'd like to see to it you have one.
I used to work as a butler, so I have experiencing in mixing some pretty decent cocktails.
As much as I would love make people here a drink, I'd also enjoy showing how good I am with my hands. And, well, everything else, for the record.
Not much for books honestly; they put me to sleep better than any sedative. But I do like jazz and swing music, mystery films, and I favor beef wellingtons.
I consider myself a flexible man, but I like someone with a quick wit.

[And he believes that Cloud is prepared to cause as much trouble as possible.
Daan folds his arms and considers for a moment, watching Cloud, listening to him. He lets out a soft huff, bitterly wry; that's not Cloud's fault, but he just shakes his head.]
I'm not afraid of you, Cloud. [He does not say: I doubt you'll do anything I haven't already experienced, or worse.]
no subject
So… I’ll be fine.
[ but it would be nice to imagine it. daan wrapping gauze around his arm, his knuckles brushing up his skin. being doted on as he hovers over him…
“uh, getting a little in your head there, buddy.”
right.
cloud blinks at what he says next. it was hard — to not feel like everyone was gawking. like there wasn’t this wrongness about him. but he swallows, letting his eyes flick back up to him. ]
…Alright. [ he clears his throat. ] You uh, wanna smoke with me?
[ “you’re…really bad at this, spikes.” shut up! just shut up. ]
no subject
cloud please summon pinecone pig] So, that's what gives you such a distinct look in your eyes....Still. I can offer healing magic as well. Just... don't be too reckless.
[The idea of Cloud being injured or worse-- it makes a knotted sensation in is chest, clenching. It's a rare feeling when it concerns someone else, but so it is rare for Daan to really have a sincere bond with another person, as well.
The invitation, though, well. That makes for a wry look on his face.]
Sure. Would you like to pick the flavor?
no subject
he hadn’t even realized he looked at his eyes — well, it was hard not to, especially with the way they burned through the darkness right now. ]
…Yes, doc. [ he teases, but he means it too. ] I’ll try.
[ as for flavors, well, he eyes the menu — vanilla… he always was partial to vanilla. at least from what he can vaguely remember. stiffly, he lets their server know, and it isn’t long before the bowl is packed and the bong is ready and loaded.
god, how does he do this again. cloud strife is literally the last person who should be smoking weed. the employee notices his… visible ineptitude and offers a cursory tutorial.
okay. his mouth closes over the opening; a deep inhale, and then…
he chokes on smoke. oh shit. he’s coughing. yeah that’s vanilla alright. ]
Fuck, [ he accidentally coughs out. this is so humiliating. but whatever this strain is, it isn’t messing around, because a sense of offkilterness barrages him immediately. like he’s floating outside of his own body.
he doesn’t say anything. it’s probably his own mind at play. ]
Uh. [ the shame is reaching critical mass. ] …You next.
no subject
Easy there. Get some water or something.
[For Daan, well, this isn't hard for him at all. It's different than a cigarette, but this isn't his first time with these things either. So, he takes a long drag, exhaling smoke up toward the ceiling casually. Vanilla's a good flavor choice, he thinks; pretty easygoing for this.
He isn't sure what kind of sensation will come after, as he doesn't exactly think this stuff is going to be unlaced, but at least he isn't feeling ferociously turned on. That's a nice first. But there's a strange sensation that does tingle after.
Daan tilts his head, curious.]
Mm. Not bad.
no subject
[ he is not fine. cloud is still catching his breath and when he sees how effortlessly daan takes it, the feeling of stupidity is compounded.
determined, cloud takes another hit; smoke fizzles up in plumes, surrounding him, and he snaps his head up. at least he did it correctly this time.
but… more notably, their surroundings fade into obscurity, an after thought and nothing more. it feels like — it’s only the two of them in this room right now. like the air has frozen over, everything suspended in time with the exception of them.
daan will feel it. the embers of affection. the emptiness of his soul. the guilt of his existence. the self deprecation — the want to be noticed by him, to mean something.
cloud can feel it, too. a bonedeep sadness that superseded even his own. he looks up carefully, peering into daan’s eyes. ]
…Daan? [ he asks hesitantly. with an air of protectiveness, he scoots much closer, his hand hovering over his. daan will feel that too: an earnest desire to keep him safe. ]
Did it… [ his mouth dries. ] Did it hit you too?
no subject
Daan holds his breath for a moment. Within that deep, dark pit of sadness that he tries to compartmentalize and ignore, is a shred of anxiety. Of being known. But he has his warm fondness for Cloud in return, even if there's a mixture of everything else to go with it. He'll fuck it up somehow if he holds on, and if he does then certainly he deserves it.
Safe. Cloud really wants to keep him safe. He's so sweet.
Daan hesitantly takes his hand, remembering to breathe now.]
...Yeah.
This is a first for me, gotta say.
no subject
uncertainty spikes. warmth seeps into his skin at the touch of daan’s hand. then it overflows, in spite of all of the bad, the sheer chaos of his feelings melting into that same warmth and love. maybe in the end, this is just who cloud was as a person — what he was trying to hide, keep buried beneath the veil.
his fingers wrap around daan’s. he can still feel that sadness in the back of his mind, and cloud’s eyes shine, innocent and puppy-like and concerned. ]
You’ve got me. [ i can feel how alone you are. how alone you have been. ] I’m not going anywhere.
no subject
And in some ways, somehow, they share a similar pool of grief, of sadness. It makes Daan afraid to be seen, a cornered cat too often abandoned and unsure of how to remember to trust, if that's ever been an option.
But he knows Cloud is being so genuine and honest.]
...I'm not as good of a person as you think I am, Cloud.
[After trying and failing to push him away, there is a part of him that now fears being successful.]
no subject
his grip doesn’t go slack. it’s resolute in what it is. cloud isn’t certain in a lot — but he’s certain in his faith in daan. daan will feel that too; heat, warmth, trust, love in bursts. ]
I… I don’t care. [ he admits. ] I’m in this now. And I’m not changing my mind.
[ maybe daan can see — a little blonde boy, in a white shirt, standing besides them. he watches expectantly, small and fragile. ]
no subject
He feels overwhelmed and frightened. As fragile as the brief glimpse of that boy.
Oh, but don't forget, old friend, Daan can practically hear the cat's purr, the grip on his shoulder. Don't forget whose you will be. I can wait a little longer, don't worry.
Daan braces his free hand to his forehead, gripping his bangs, squeezing his eye closed. It doesn't quite manage to stop it from tearing up. A million thoughts pass by him -- how Cloud shouldn't, he's wasting his time, the clock is ticking, he's a degenerate, he's nothing--]
So fucking stubborn. [He does not succeed in sounding angry, his voice thick as if he was mourning.]
no subject
guilt hits him first. then it crescendos into concern. he doesn’t realize it until he hears his voice; that he’s crying. and then every emotion hits him at once, and what subsumes it all is that warmth, the core of his heart eating away at any doubts. it’s loving and kind and blankets them both, even if there are undercurrents of uncertainty and self hatred.
daan’s feelings nearly consume him whole. he had no idea they’d run so deep: that they’d been this powerful. how does he live like this, he wonders? it’s suffocating to even be in proximation to it.
but cloud fights back regardless; lets his determination, his compassion for him tide over the shoreline, pulling daan in. ]
Yeah. [ and then awkwardly, clumsily, his arms wrap around him — the movement is slow and stilted and somewhat alien, but he goes for it no less. his hand meets his back, smoothing over his clothing. ]
I know.
[ and then… ]
You’re wrong, by the way. [ … ] About yourself.
no subject
It's probably selfish of him, but it's also a good feeling. To be held, and-- loved. It's nothing like the parody of Sylvian's insidious touch, he thinks. Where Sylvian stokes a poisonous flame, this is more like the warmth of a fireplace.
His lips purse. Daan wants to correct him, but... not now. Not today.]
You're lucky I don't really have the strength to argue right now. [Though he goes for a wry voice, it sounds more like he truly is tired.
It would be nice to be worthy of this affection. Of this love. What a thought that is.]
no subject
[ because he’s right and he knows it. a sense of satisfaction creeps into his mind — he wanted to be someone the people he cherished could rely on. he wanted to be strong. he wanted to be like ****. this brings him one step closer.
but more notably, he realizes that daan’s exterior is whittling away, bit by bit, and fulfillment flickers in the flame of his heart at that. he’s caught in the throes of empathy, simply feeling for him for a long stretch of time as they sit there, but it erupts into flecks of protectiveness, of a desire to…
a desire to save him.
he wasn’t a knight, climbing up the ivory tower. but he wishes he was all too often.
who could he even protect like this? reno had said it himself. his life is going to shit. that must mean that sephiroth—
still…he clings onto that feeling. despite the fear gnawing at his chest, it doesn’t fade.
then at last— ]
Sorry. [ … ] It’s my fault. Should’ve picked a different strand… a different place.
[ and then, more selfishly— ]
But I’m glad… I got to know more about you.
no subject
[There's some affection in his words. Because he is truly fond of Cloud, even in the mix of everything else that's turbulent in Daan's chest. Either way, at least Daan isn't trying to actively sabotage himself right now. So, he's got that going for him.
Tomorrow's another day.
Daan shakes his head.]
You didn't do anything wrong. ...Neither of us could have expected what was going to happen. [honestly daan thought the worst was going to be like getting horny or something, which still isn't his favorite but at least he expects it. Actively sharing empathy, well... that's a new one, even for him.]
Ah, if only I could offer something more cheerful for you to know.
[daang he's really got nothin to share, what the hell]
I'll pick the spot next time. If you... want a next time.
no subject
[ which he is certain he is! deal with it, daan. he hasn’t let go of him yet; cloud savors the warmth as much as he does. his grip tightens, and he gives a squeeze, embracing him tenderly.
his heart is alight with something inexplicable. affection. connection. care. ]
Don’t be an idiot. [ cloud admonishes. ] Yeah, I want a next time. And a time after, too. I’ll hunt you down if I have to.
[ is it normal to say that? well, he said it anyways. for a moment, cloud deliberates — and then… ]
Mm. [ two men who were terrible at opening up — at talking about themselves. and here they are, in the most ill fitting situation, experiencing…
an emotion that can’t be put to words. ]
Tell me your favorite food.
[ stupid, but it was something. ]
no subject
He huffs softly in amusement.] Glutton for trouble, aren't you? Well. ...I suppose we'll see how things go.
[dang cloud getting a second date what is up with that]
I'm not too picky about food. You stop doing that real fast, but I always looked forward to a beef wellington when the occasion would rise.
And what about you, hm?
no subject
and this is just the secret golden saucer date dlc they didn’t warn you about. call him mr. rizz strife.
at what daan says next, well, he weighs his options carefully.
> stay silent
> “I’m a glutton for you.” ]
I’m a glutton for you.
[ why the fuck did he just say that.
anyways, back to the conversation. beef wellington. sounded… fancy. leagues beyond his own palate. after an awkward silence— ]
Uh. [ a beat. ] I like… milk.
[ okay, well, now he looks dumb. next question. quick. ]
Do you…have any hobbies?
no subject
Daan snorts softly, almost laughing. It's such a dorky way to flirt, but it seems to work on him, making Daan smile fondly against Cloud.]
Milk, huh. Well, you're in luck, that's a pretty easy drink to get.
[He otherwise leaves it alone, willing to let the topic go. Sadly, Daan will remember that.]
Mm. I didn't have much time to really focus on that sort of thing. Though I get some relaxation in mixing cocktails. I was a butler before I was a doctor, and had plenty of practice getting those kinds of things perfect.
no subject
what is it with him and bartenders? his mind wanders to tifa immediately and wonders if she would be able to teach daan more about it. he doesn’t ask favors of her often, but… ]
Make me a drink sometime.
[ then he mentions he was a butler, and indignation flutters in his chest at the thought. ]
You don’t always have to be the one to take care of other people, you know.
no subject
[He teases gently, remembering when they were in the Red Cardinal together.]
...Well. I did what I had to in order to survive. [The way he says it is quiet, but he knows -- he's been almost nothing but subservient his entire life. His lot in life, always serving others in some way, just to make sure he could live another day.] That's how it is, sometimes.
Anyway. You should tell me a hobby of yours, too.
no subject
[ he hears the way his voice quiets, and he bristles on his behalf; daan can probably feel it too, the anger bubbling beneath his skin. ]
That’s not how it should be. [ cloud shakes his head. ] Nobody should have put you in that position.
[ the sudden shift onto him makes him go stiff. uncertainty envelops him. with some sheepishness… ]
…Don‘t have any. [ nobody’s ever asked him about this before. ] I… spent most of my life trying to become a SOLDIER, so…
[ he hasn’t discovered his passion for chocobo racing yet… embarrassment heats his cheeks. ]
no subject
[He's worn many masks in the past, after all. Learned how to talk to all kinds of people, for better or for worse.]
...No one should have to do any of that, Cloud. I do fully believe that. But it's not always like people have choices. I certainly didn't.
[There's a pause, then he gives Cloud a kiss on the cheek.] Thank you, though. [For being protective of him. He isn't used to it by any means, but he's finding some comfort in it.]
Mm, that's fair. I understand what that's like. [To him it doesn't sound like it's anything to be embarrassed about. Daan's hardly had time to develop many hobbies either.] Sounds like we both could stand to find a few here.
...Is there anything from your home that you miss?
no subject
[ cloud pouts with all of the sopping, wet attitude of a dog. it makes his heart ache to think of daan living that way -- but then there's a kiss to his cheek, and daan will feel him perk up in real time, his pulse racing. ]
Yeah, [ he stumbles on his words. ] ...don't mention it.
[ daan is much more understanding than he'd expect from a person; it shouldn't surprise him. daan was...always understanding. kind. patient. ]
...People, mostly. [ he wouldn't admit this to anyone else aside from tifa, but-- ] There was this girl... named Aerith. She was here and then she was... gone. Just like that.
[ cloud's voice quiets. ]
It's... been weird, I guess. [ a moment passes. ] Don't think I have enough of a home to miss it, really.
no subject
A soldier's job is a bit more straightforward, at least. Less being a people person. ...Not to say I don't find you charming. [cuz he sure do
The mention of Aerith earns a surprised look on Daan's face.]
...I encountered her around the time we all ended up here. Lovely woman. I could see why you would miss her. [and like if that's your girlfriend he respects that so hard man]
No, I understand what you mean. I don't have a good concept of "home" anyway.
