Concentrated whispers carried out by the older god Sylvian. Heals a considerable amount of health. Precariously the whisper's effects are solely based on Sylvian's whims.
Players are welcome to decide how much of a healing effect takes place with the spell. In addition, as this is a spell from the Goddess of Love and Fertility, there are possible side-effects to the person being healed:
- Character might feel a brief attraction toward Daan. This would last no more than 15 minutes. - Character might get flustered/horny. - If the character has a close relationship with Daan, they might end up experiencing the emotions that Daan has toward them. This can be a familial, platonic, or romantic feeling, dependent on the nature of your relationship with Daan. - Character may experience whatever their understanding of love is. This can boil down to love from an important person/family member/etc, it may even bring up a brief memory. Solely up to your interpretation. - Maybe nothing! This is all up to you to decide if you want your character affected at all. After all, it's up to Sylvian's whims, so it's easy to explain away if you don't want anything to happen as a side-effect.
Although these aspects are heavily implied, I'm taking them more as strictly canon.
Your parents would be more concerned on the matters of religion than you. To make it worse, they even tried to pass on the healing gift of Sylvian to you. From very early on you learned that no gift comes without a price. With Sylvian's "gift of healing" you saw how the mental state of your parents deteriorated over time.
Considering the focus of sex being part of the Sylvian cultists and the meaning of "passing on the healing gift", it's heavily implied that Daan was eventually dragged to join in on the constant orgies his parents would often go to.
They spent longer and longer times on the meadows. Until one day they never returned... You were 13 years of age and alone in the Kingdom of Rondon. You had to do something for living. You didn't have any natural talent as a pickpocket per se and the underworld of Rondon was very rough on you... You weren't cut out to be a street thug, so you had to rely on the only skills you had for the money... The healing gift of Sylvian.
Thus, as a result, the additional implication is that Daan as a teenager spent time doing sex work until he achieved enough affinity with Sylvian to obtain the spell Loving Whispers.
It is unquestionable that Daan fell in love almost immediately with Baron von Dutch's daughter, Elise. However, I work with the interpretation that Elise was fond of Daan, but in the way one might feel distantly about a pet instead of, say, your husband.
Over time you got better acquainted with the daughter of the house. Her name was Elise. She would be endlessly amused by your childhood stories and all the madness your past cult life brought with it.
As much as the world of Fear & Hunger is a miserable one, it's also unquestionable the kinds of awful treatment Daan received during his childhood. While the baron found a source to feed his occult interests, the fact that Elise was amused is informing of less than empathetic intentions. This is not something Daan necessarily recognizes, desperate to love and be loved for once in his life. Ultimately, Daan was more of a means to an end than he was actually part of the von Dutch family.
In addition, I work under the assumption that Elise willingly entered the ritual to the Sulfur God that caused her to become Stitches, primarily due to a line Per'kele says about becoming a follower of Sulfur.
To give death (kill), to witness death (obvious), and to experience death (die) all must be consensual to become a Sulfur cultist. Stitches clearly is one, due to the blue hue on part of her face, as all Sulfur cultists have.
This is not something Daan can necessarily conclude without additional information. For all intents and purposes, he still has no answers as to what happened and how Elise became Stitches, but I figured it would be good to place my thoughts on where I stand on the whole thing. Basically, Daan was in love, Elise didn't necessarily feel the same but was fond of him, they married, but she was on board with the whole ritual with her father.
